Short Biography

Professor Wai Ho MOW received his BSc (Electronics) in 1989, MPhil and PhD (Information Engineering) in 1991 and 1993 respectively, all from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). In 1994, he was a visiting assistant professor at the Department of Information Engineering, CUHK. He was a visiting scholar at the University of Waterloo, the Munich University of Technology (TUM), the Kyoto University, and the University of California at San Diego in 1995, 1996, 2000, and 2010, respectively. From 1997 to 1999, he was an assistant professor at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He joined the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, in March 2000. He has been an Adjunct Professor of the Southwest Jiaotong University, Chengdu, China from 2003 to 2008. In spite of the relatively short PhD study period, he received the Best PhD Thesis in Engineering Award and the Young Scholar Dissertation Award. His research interests are in the areas of wireless communications, coding and information theory. He pioneered the lattice approach to signal detection problems (such as sphere decoding and complex lattice reduction-aided detection) and unified all known constructions of perfect (or CAZAC) root-of-unity sequences (widely used as preambles and radar signals). Since Jun 2002, he has been the principal investigator of over 16 funded research projects. Citations of his research contributions can be found in several prominent publications, including Encyclopaedia of Mathematics, Springer, http://eom.springer.de/C/c110430.htm; Handbook of Coding Theory, Elsevier Press, 1998, Chapter 21; The Mobile Communications Handbook, IEEE/CRC Press, 2nd Edition, 1999, Section 8.5; The Communications Handbook, IEEE/CRC Press, 2nd Edition, 2002, Section 8.5. He has published 1 book, and co-authored over 30 filed patent applications and about 200 technical publications, among which he is the sole author of over 40. His joint work received the 2014 HK-Taiwan IoT Academia Best Research Award, the 2014 Hong Kong U-21 IoT Gold Award for IoT Revolutional Concept, the ACM MobiCom2013 Best Mobile App Award, the APCC2013 Best Paper Award, and the ISITA2002 Paper Award for Young Researchers. A novel picture-embedding 2D barcode, PiCode, developed by the HKUST Barcode Group under his leadership was highlighted as one of the four local innovations in the 2015 International IT Fest, a flagship event organized by the Office of Government Information Officer, Hong Kong.

He was a past chair of the Hong Kong Chapter of the IEEE Information Theory Society. He was a technical program co-chair of the First Hong Kong Information Theory Colloquium in 2000, the IEEE Information Theory Workshop in 2003, the First IEEE Taiwan/Hong Kong Joint Workshop on Information Theory and Communications in 2005, and the Second International Workshop on Sequence Design and its Applications in Communications (IWSDA'05). He was also the Chair of the Communication Theory Symposium of the International Conference on Communications, Circuits and Systems

(ICCCAS'05 & '04), and the Finance Chair of the 2015 International Symposium on Information Theory (ISIT'15).  He served the technical program committees of various  international conferences such as Globecom, ICC, ISITA, ITW, VTC and WCNC.  He is currently an editor of IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications and was a guest/associate editor for numerous special sections of the IEICE Transactions on Fundamentals. He was a past industrial consultant for Huawei, ZTE, and Magnotech Ltd. He was a member of the Radio Spectrum Advisory Committee, Office of the Telecommunications Authority, the Hong Kong S.A.R.
