Erin Brockovich(Web site
Cast: Julia Roberts
Director :
Steven Soderbergh

Julia Roberts is so so good in playing this role. She is just Erin Brockovich. Well, but this makes me think that whether that character is in fact her own ones? That's why she played it so well? ^_^

The movie was made more interesting coz it based on a true story. It is absolutely a very entertaining movie, but don't ask everything more. But isn't that enough for entertainment and relaxation? One thing thou, are guys really that useless, brainless and dump in front of a pretty lady? Ha, may be yes! =D

12 Nights
Cast: Eason Chan, Cecila Cheung
Director :
Lam Oi Wah

I really don't agree with the point of view on love in this movie. Everyone do things based on their feelings, and they never thought about others nor responsibility etc. May be this is how the world has changed to, and that's how today's boys and girls do. May be I'm 'out'!

Despite of that, I quite enjoy the movie. It is so realistic. If you ever have a love relationship, you will absolutely experienced something similar (very much the same indeed). It just brings your memories back right in front of your eyes. The great thing is, it filmed those unhappy scenes in a funny way and you won't feel so sad and blue after it. I think the director filmed it very well and the editing work is great.

Of course, Eason's vocal is marvellous!

Sausalitao
Cast: Maggie Cheung, Leon Lai
Director :
Andrew Lau

Personally I think this movie is not quite impressive. The storyline is so plain and simple, and nothing really surprising. The most impressive thing is Maggie Cheung's performance. She expressed out the complicated feelings of that character very well. Other than that, there's nothing really caught me.

Mission to Mars (Web site
Cast: Gary Sinise, Don Cheadle
Director :
Brian De Palma

I really can't believe this sort of film is still made these days. Yes it has cool visual effects, but what else is good? How can a movie talking about going to Mars without filming the first step on Mars? I also can't believe in year 2020, people dressed the same as today! And it tried to make a car (the only car in this film) look futuristic, but it is 90% similar to one made by Isuzu now.

When I was watching the movie, by the time the alien face-like building is showed, someone screamed, "Ultra man"! We just all laugh about it, coz it really looks like the Ultraman!

Something I'm very frustrated about is that it tried to use mathematics in doing the analysis for the alien signal. I think the movie writers just wanna do something like 'Contact'. Well, I appreciated they put 2 signals with delay in a 3D plane, which ends up with a circular structure. However, anyone who knows signal will understand that for 2 signals having same frequency but with delay, they will sound the same. But in the movie, they said there are 2 different tones, which is definitely not correct. Moreover, based on what is said in the movie, even if you can construct the 3D circular DNA structure, there is no more extra information in putting the acid pairs. It's just so unreal. Please don't try to use mathematics in movies if you don't know what it really is.

Furthermore, this movie tried to unveil why there is life in earth. Everyone knows that the idea of evolution is not true coz it can't tell where matters comes from to form the universe, and where lifes come from. This movie wanted to impress people by bringing the problem to a further level. It said that we're all descendents of Martian. It was Martian who seeded life onto Earth. Wooow, I really can't believe I saw a movie like this. It tried to explain something, but those explanation is also not true. Coz ok, even if it was Martian who seeded life on Earth, then who did it to Martian?

Well, may be I'm a Christian and I oppose the idea of evolution. That's why I'm a bit critical about the idea in this movie. But frankly, don't waste money to watch such a crappy movie, not even a VCD.

American Beauty (Web site)
Cast: Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening
Director :
Sam Mendes

Needless to say, it is a superb movie. From all the "thumbs-up" comments, to the big winner of Oscar this year, everybody talks about it. The black comedy style to present the dark and ugly side of human is really excellent.

Everything lies around the Burnham family, from the Burnhams to their neighbors, friends, competitors etc. The life for each of them are just so "normal" and so "human", but each of them do have the ugly and horrible face inside them. The scary thing is, all of us do have some of those. We usually don't recognize it, but if you do, you'll feel that the world is so gray and hopeless, coz this world is compose of us, humans.

Although this movie seems like a comedy, it is in fact one with very deep meanings. I think different people will have different perceptions from this movie. Some might think that this is merely a comedy, but some might think otherwise. I always think that watching movies (especially ones like this) is like pouring liquids onto a container, how much you can carry and what you can carry depends on which type of container you are.

Go and see it yourself to get what you're going get.

The Green Mile (Web site)
Cast: Tom Hanks, Michael Clarke Duncan
Director :
Frank Darabont

Without Tom Hanks, this movie cannot be this great. It is an interesting and exciting story, and this movie is absolutely entertaining. But Tom Hanks' marvelous acting skill worth lots of credits.

This movie is very heart-warming. At first I thought it would be all focused on John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan) and how the guards do to prove and save someone who might be innocent. But it turned out to be a surprise for me coz it isn't what I thought, and the story lines for the other in-mates, the guards are also very good.

One thing that I found interesting to think about, "Do you think if a man sincerely repents on what he done wrong, he might get to go back to the time that was happiest for him and live there forever? Don't that be heaven's like?" - Arlen Bitterbuck (Graham Greene)

Magnolia (Website)
Cast: Tom Cruise, Julianne Moore, ....
Director :
Paul Thomas Anderson

Nine story lines on nine different persons and nine different life, but they are all somehow related to one and other. It is difficult to say who is the leading actor and actress, coz all of them shared almost the same portion in the movie.

This movie is in some sense similar to American Beauty, coz it also tried to narrate life. However of course, these two movies are quite different in the way they presented it. Nine different people are so different but with one thing in common, the process of life. One grew up experiencing some problems turns to some type of character. It seems to be inevitable, even for some who tried hard to shake off the past (Frank Mackey - Tom Cruise), at the end of the day, he still can't lie to himself that he is still he.

Personally, I think American Beauty is more interesting and attractive, coz it used a black comedy style and the movie is more focused onto the Burnhams. For Magnolia, nine story lines go in parallel and they evened the viewers' concentration. However, I think Magnolia is more successful in presenting the process of life. Of course, American Beauty is extremely successful in describing the ugly side of human.

These 2 movies are not meant to be compared coz they're different. But as they're somehow similar, I might just give a little bit of comparison.

However, among the nine stories, some of them are too rare to happen (like the wiz kids) and might just make no interaction to us. But once again, how much you can carry and what you can carry depends on which type of container you are. I think I still haven't got a lot out of it. So, wanna try yourself? ^_^

A Story of Us (Website)
Cast: Bruce Willis, Michelle Pfeiffer
Director :
Rob Reiner

To many people, this will be just a very common movie with straight story line and nothing exciting. However, for those that have serious struggles on love relationship, this movie will be great. Personally I found it very touchy.

The story is about 2 people (Ben and Katie) having problems with their long but faded love relationship, but still being the dad and mum of two kids. They were really great, but now they pretended to be in front of the kids. Memories do come out often, but still today is the reality. How are they going to face each other?

The movie simply puts the struggles and arguments that 2 people being together have onto the screen. Those things seems so "normal" but they are definitely hurting the relationship. This movie doesn't have any great theories and blah blah blah, but it will give you some thoughts on how to deal with faded love relationship.

I liked it, especially the way the word "us" is used.
