Postgraduate Admissions
 

The Department offers postgraduate programs leading to the degrees of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Electronic and Computer Engineering.

Full-time and part-time options are available for both MPhil and PhD degrees. The normal study load for full-time MPhil/PhD students is 10 credits per regular term whereas the maximum study load for those in part-time mode is 8 credits per term. We also offer a number of self-financing Master of Science (MSc) programs.

Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme
Established in 2009 by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC), the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme aims at attracting the best and brightest students from around the world to pursue doctoral studies in Hong Kong.

Eligible applicants are those seeking admission as new full-time PhD research candidates in Government-funded institutions in Hong Kong irrespective of their country of origin and ethnic background. Applicants should demonstrate outstanding academic performance, and good research ability and potential.

The Fellowship provides an annual stipend of HK$240,000 (approximately US$30,000) and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$10,000 (approximately US$1,300) per year to each awardee for a period of up to three years.

Admission Requirements
Applicants for admission to the MPhil or PhD program are required to have completed, by the time they enter HKUST, a Bachelor's degree in Electronic and/or Computer Engineering or a related science or engineering field with high honors.

TOEFL or IELTS scores are required for non-local applicants whose primary language is not English and whose degree or equivalent qualification was awarded by an institution where the medium of instruction was not English.

Admission to the postgraduate program will be based on the applicants' academic record and research potential. Applicants are advised to submit:

a one-page statement of the plan for postgraduate study;
previous project reports and publications (if any)

Originals of qualification documents (e.g. transcripts) and other supporting documents should be submitted directly to the Postgraduate Outreach and Admissions Unit for verification and records.


Application Procedures
Application details for the Postgraduate Studies can be found in the webpage of Office of Postgraduate Studies. Application closing date for admission to MPhil and PhD programs in academic year 2018-19 is 1 May 2018.

Application result will be announced via the online Application System within 3-4 months upon the application closing date.

Letter of admission offer will be issued to the selected applicants. To secure the offer, applicants are requested to indicate the acceptance and settle the required deposit of HK$5,000 by the stipulated deadline.

Postgraduate Studentship will be offered to full-time MPhil and PhD students subject to the discretion of the Department.
