Biography
Professor Au was born and raised in Hong Kong. He received his Bachelor of Applied Science degree with honors in the Department of Engineering Science (EE Option) at the University of Toronto, Canada, in 1986. He obtained his Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Princeton, USA, in 1988 and 1991 respectively. His thesis was concerned with the detection of signals in correlated non-Gaussian noise channels. From 1991–1992, Professor Au was a postdoctoral fellow at the Image Processing Laboratory in Princeton University studying various HDTV compression schemes. Since then, he has been actively doing research on image and video coding. In August 1992, he joined the ECE department at HKUST as an assistant Professor. Professor Au is actively involved in IEEE local and international activities. He served on the IEEE Hong Kong Section and Signal Processing Hong Kong Chapter. He also served on the Technical Committee on Multimedia Systems and Applications of the CAS Society. He helped to organize IEEE international conferences: ISSIPNN’94, ISCAS’97 and ICASSP 2003.
